At the heart of Alpine X’s technology is a novel adsorption material developed specifically for direct air capture at altitude. Alpine X commissioned NovoMOF, an award winning specialist in metal organic framework development and production, to identify and manufacture the optimal MOF candidate for its DACA process.
Metal organic frameworks are highly engineered, porous materials composed of metal nodes and organic linkers, offering exceptionally high internal surface area and tunable chemistry. Building on foundational research in reticular chemistry pioneered by leaders such as Omar Yaghi, MOFs can be tailored to perform under specific environmental constraints, including the cold temperatures and low humidity conditions common in alpine environments.
The selected MOF has been optimized for efficient carbon dioxide capture under low partial pressure, with fast adsorption and regeneration cycles. This enables significantly improved energy efficiency during operation, requiring very little heat and no water during regeneration, while supporting continuous system performance.
Alpine X is working with academic and technical partners to evaluate material stability, adsorption efficiency, and long term durability under real alpine operating cycles. This research driven approach reflects a broader strategy to integrate material science directly into system design, ensuring that capture performance is not theoretical, but validated through sustained operation in demanding real world environments.
